Building a Data Mesh: A beginners guide

Introduction

If you are reading this article you are probably wondering what a Data Mesh is, and to be honest, I’m still wondering the same thing. I’ve read many articles and I’m still confused.

How do I implement a Data Mesh? Looking at different articles, the implementation, and even some ideas, differ considerably. It seems that everyone interprets Data Mesh differently, adjusting some of the ideas to their current process, something similar to what happened to Scrum and other agile methodologies. Sometimes I do wonder if this is just the next buzzword and nothing more; since when you zoom into the details it seems that Data Mesh is nothing more than applying the same concepts that we already apply to applications such as observability, security, self service, governance, DDD, etc. to data.

The goal of this article is to try to bring some clarity to all concepts associated with a Data Mesh including the processes and tooling required to implement it. This is just my personal attempt to make sense of all the articles published around this topic.
